How to Verify a Company in France in 2026: Complete Guide

France has one of the most transparent company registries in the world. Here's how to use all that data for your due diligence.

France is one of the most advanced countries in the world when it comes to company data transparency. With over 11 million registered companies and comprehensive official registries, verifying a French company is both accessible and precise — provided you know where to look.

This guide explains how to verify a company in France in 2026, whether you are assessing a commercial partner, a supplier, an acquisition target, or a debtor.

Key Identifiers of a French Company

France has one of the most structured company identification systems in Europe.

The SIREN is the unique 9-digit number assigned by INSEE to each company upon creation. It identifies the legal entity as a whole and never changes, even if the company relocates.

The SIRET is the SIREN followed by 5 additional digits (NIC) that identify each establishment. A company with multiple locations will have one SIRET per establishment, but a single SIREN.

The intra-EU VAT number is built from the SIREN (FR + 2 check digits + SIREN). Any VAT-registered company in France must display it on invoices.

What You Can Verify on a French Company

France ranks first globally in Open Data maturity. The amount of information available on companies is substantial.

SYNTA-IQ aggregates French legal and financial data and enriches it through our network of local partners who verify and structure every data point to ensure reliable, up-to-date intelligence.

Legal data: Company name, legal form, corporate purpose, incorporation date, registered office, capital, directors, shareholders (listed companies).

Financial data: Filed annual accounts, revenue, net income, headcount, financial ratios across multiple years.

Legal events: BODACC announcements (incorporations, amendments, insolvency), court-ordered restructuring or liquidation, pledges and liens.

The 5 Steps to Verify a French Company

1
Identify by SIREN
The first step is confirming the company's SIREN. Any official French company document must mention it. Verify that the SIREN communicated matches the company you are dealing with.
2
Check RCS registration status
Look up the registration status: is the company active, under court-supervised restructuring, in liquidation, or struck off? A company under insolvency proceedings represents a major risk.
3
Verify the directors
The Kbis extract lists the people authorized to commit the company. Verify that your contact appears on this list. A Kbis older than 3 months is generally considered outdated in serious transactions.
4
Analyze the annual accounts
For companies that file accounts, review balance sheets and income statements over 3 to 5 years. Look at revenue growth, equity evolution, and debt levels. Negative equity signals a potentially critical situation.
5
Monitor BODACC announcements
The Official Bulletin of Civil and Commercial Announcements publishes all mandatory legal notices. A safeguard procedure, restructuring, or disposal notice should immediately draw your attention.

French Specificities to Know

Account confidentiality
SARLs with revenue below €8 million can request that their accounts not be published. SYNTA-IQ systematically flags when an account has opted for confidentiality.
Micro-enterprises
Micro-enterprises and self-employed individuals do not file accounts. The absence of financial data is therefore not necessarily a negative signal.
Public insolvency proceedings
A history of judicial liquidation by a director is accessible and constitutes a significant risk signal to factor into your analysis.
Outdated Kbis
In serious commercial transactions, a Kbis older than 3 months is generally refused. Always request a recent Kbis.
