France has one of the most transparent company registries in the world. Here's how to use all that data for your due diligence.
France is one of the most advanced countries in the world when it comes to company data transparency. With over 11 million registered companies and comprehensive official registries, verifying a French company is both accessible and precise — provided you know where to look.
This guide explains how to verify a company in France in 2026, whether you are assessing a commercial partner, a supplier, an acquisition target, or a debtor.
Key Identifiers of a French Company
France has one of the most structured company identification systems in Europe.
The SIREN is the unique 9-digit number assigned by INSEE to each company upon creation. It identifies the legal entity as a whole and never changes, even if the company relocates.
The SIRET is the SIREN followed by 5 additional digits (NIC) that identify each establishment. A company with multiple locations will have one SIRET per establishment, but a single SIREN.
The intra-EU VAT number is built from the SIREN (FR + 2 check digits + SIREN). Any VAT-registered company in France must display it on invoices.
