How to Search SEC EDGAR: A Complete Guide for Analysts and Compliance Teams

Step-by-step guide to searching SEC EDGAR for US public company filings, financial statements, insider transactions, and ownership data. Learn how to use CIK numbers, XBRL APIs, and full-text search.

What is SEC EDGAR?

SEC EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval) is the US Securities and Exchange Commission's free public database of financial disclosures from publicly traded US companies. Every company that issues publicly traded securities in the US must file reports with the SEC — and EDGAR makes all of those filings publicly accessible.

EDGAR contains over 25 million filings from more than 500,000 companies and individuals going back to 1993. It is the definitive source of record for US public company financial data.

Understanding CIK Numbers

Every filer registered with the SEC has a unique Central Index Key (CIK) number. This is the primary identifier used throughout EDGAR. A CIK number is a 10-digit code assigned sequentially — for example:
- Apple Inc.: CIK 0000320193
- Microsoft Corporation: CIK 0000789019
- Amazon.com, Inc.: CIK 0001018724

CIK numbers do not change when a company changes its name, ticker symbol, or moves its headquarters. They are permanent identifiers for the SEC filer entity.

To find a company's CIK, use the EDGAR company search at sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar or search by company name. You can also use Synta-IQ's US company search which maps company names and tickers to their CIK numbers.

Key Filing Types to Know

EDGAR hosts hundreds of form types. The most important for company analysis are:

10-K — Annual Report. The most comprehensive disclosure a public company files. Contains audited financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow), business description, risk factors, MD&A (Management Discussion & Analysis), and executive compensation. Due 60-90 days after fiscal year end.

10-Q — Quarterly Report. Filed for Q1, Q2, Q3. Contains unaudited financial statements and interim MD&A. Not filed for Q4 (covered by the 10-K).

8-K — Current Report. Filed within 4 business days of a "material event" — earnings announcements, M&A deals, CEO changes, credit facility amendments, regulatory actions, etc. Excellent for real-time tracking of corporate developments.

DEF 14A — Proxy Statement. Filed before annual shareholder meetings. Discloses executive compensation, board composition, and shareholder vote items.

SC 13D / SC 13G — Beneficial Ownership. Filed when an investor acquires more than 5% of a company's voting shares. 13D for active investors; 13G for passive.

Form 4 — Insider Transactions. Filed within 2 business days when a director, officer, or 10%+ shareholder buys or sells company shares.

How to Search EDGAR Effectively

By company name or CIK: Go to efts.sec.gov/LATEST/search-index?q=company+name&dateRange=custom&startdt=2024-01-01 or use the EDGAR EFTS full-text search at efts.sec.gov/LATEST/search-index.

By ticker symbol: The EDGAR company search accepts ticker symbols. Note that some companies file under a different name than their ticker (e.g., "Alphabet Inc." files as GOOGL).

By filing type: Filter for specific forms (10-K, 8-K, 13F, etc.) to narrow results.

EDGAR XBRL API: For structured financial data, use the SEC's XBRL API at data.sec.gov/api/xbrl/companyfacts/CIK{cik}.json — this returns machine-readable financial data for all XBRL-tagged filings. Every public company has been required to file in XBRL format since 2009.

Full-text search (EFTS): EDGAR's Full-Text Search System searches the actual content of filings — useful for finding mentions of specific companies, contracts, litigation, or regulatory terms.
